Bridge Jumper Appears in Court After Killing K-9

A 27-year-old Vista man accused of picking up a police dog and jumping over the Coronado Bridge after a New Year's Eve pursuit, killing the animal, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony evading and abuse of a service animal.

Cory Byron, who is also charged with misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run and driving under the influence of alcohol, was arraigned at UCSD Medical Center, where he remains hospitalized with injuries he sustained in the bridge plunge.

Oceanside police received a call of a reckless driver on Highway 76 on Dec. 31. When officers spotted Byron's pickup truck, he took off, struck another vehicle and went south down to the bridge, according to authorities.

Byron got out of his car but would not cooperate, so a Belgian Malinois named Stryker was sent to subdue him, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steven Toth.

The 6 1/2-year-old service dog bit Byron on the arm and pulled him down, but the defendant grabbed the animal and jumped over the side of the bridge, Toth said.

Byron survived the fall, estimated at 200 feet, but was hospitalized with a collapsed lung. Stryker, who worked with Officer Kedrick Sadler, died.

The defendant had been on a ventilator since the crash, but at the hearing appeared in a wheelchair with a tube in his chest. He had cuts and scratches, but was able to speak and appeared aware of what was happening, according to District Attorney's Office spokesman Steve Walker.

Byron, who faces three years and eight months in prison if convicted, has a prior DUI conviction, Walker said.

Judge Robert Coates set bail at $1 million and scheduled a readiness conference for Feb. 5 at the Vista Courthouse.

A memorial service for Stryker is scheduled for Jan. 14 at 11:30 a.m. at Camp Pendleton's 11 Area parade grounds on Vandegrift Boulevard.

According to Oceanside police Lt. Fred Armijo, a number of people have offered to donate to a memorial fund. The best way would be to contribute to OPD's K9 fund, he said.
